Natural pearls produced from oysters that live in freshwater rather than in the sea, Akoya genuine pearls have a “nucleus” inserted into the oyster and a layer of nacre covering it in order to create a round and uniformly shaped pearl. Freshwater pearls are “non-nucleated” and are natural pearls with an entire layer of nacre. Freshwater pearls are not nucleated, so they do not grow into spheres, but into various shapes such as potato, rice and drop shapes. In ROCOCO, we use the potato shape, which is a pearl with no nucleus, so it can be a perfect circle or a baroque shape such as a potato or an oval.
